In the past few years, Hungary has become a more popular place to study abroad. The small country has a lot of history, culture, and beautiful landscapes. It also has a number of top universities that offer undergraduate and graduate degrees.
A place where different people and cultures come together
Even though Hungary might not be known for its many different cultures, it has recently become a hub for international students from all over the world. In fact, since 2013, the number of international students enrolling in programs at Széchenyi István University has grown by a large amount. This is a trend that shows how much the country wants to become one of the best places to work in the world.
Khalil, who is studying business administration and management for his PhD in Jordan, says that Hungary is one of the “best places” in the world to study abroad.
He said, “The country is a member of both the European Union and the Schengen Area. Many universities in Hungary are open to international students and are happy to have them there. We can mix with people from other countries and cultures.”
Waldo, a student from Mexico who is getting a BSc in Logistics Engineering, agrees with Khalil.
He said, “I wanted to travel around the world, live in Europe, and see how big the world really is.” Hungary has really opened its doors to me and made me feel welcome.”
Great student cities
All four international students said that being able to live in cities like Gyr that are friendly to students is one of the best things about studying in Hungary.
Anas, a student in marketing from the Occupied Palestinian Territories, said, “Gyr helps you find the right balance between school and your personal life. You can get a lot done in school and still have fun outside of it. This can really change a student’s personality and way of thinking for the better.
“Studying in Gyr is a one-of-a-kind chance. You learn how to live, make friends, change, be independent, and, most of all, be happy. This is one of the best places to be a student in Hungary because there are so many things to do.
He said, “Gyr is a beautiful city with a lot of culture and a lot of history. Sunday afternoons spent walking around the city will make you fall in love with its buildings.
“This city is the real deal and has everything a student could want.”
Also, compared to traditional student cities in popular places to study abroad, like North America and the UK, Gyr has a higher standard of living at a lower cost.
Waldo said, “Having lived in Szeged and Budapest before, I can say with certainty that Gyr is the best place to be a student. I found a home in Gyr because it is away from the big distractions and busy pace of the capital. It is also in a good spot in the country and has better lifestyle options than Szeged.
University that is helpful and cheap
Hungarian universities are known for offering a wide range of degrees, many of which are taught in English to make it easier for people who don’t speak Hungarian to study there. What you might not know is that they also offer a very welcoming, supportive, and affordable environment for international students, with low tuition costs and many programs to help them integrate into student communities.
At Széchenyi István University, for example, international applicants can use the Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) scholarship program, which is funded by the government and covers tuition, housing, medical insurance, and a portion of living costs for all winners.
Also, when international students arrive, they are all paired with a mentor who will help them throughout their degree, whether it’s by giving them career advice or helping them with administrative tasks.
Donovan, a South African master’s student who won the scholarship, said, “Winning the SH scholarship gave me the chance to visit a new place and look for opportunities outside of my home country. It also helped me finish my master’s degree at a much lower cost than I would have in South Africa.”
“The best part of this experience has been meeting new people, getting better at school, and having fun in an amazing city with lots to do. It has given me a lot of knowledge about the world and helped me grow as a person.
