When deciding where to go to graduate school, you might not think it’s important to look at universities outside of your own country. Whether it’s because there isn’t enough information online or because you’re afraid of a different culture, it’s easy to put off looking into your study abroad options.
But if you’re willing to look into what other countries have to offer, you may find the perfect study program for you. Here’s why some of the most common myths about going to graduate school abroad shouldn’t scare you.
I will have to learn or speak a second language.
If you want to study English abroad, you might think you only have the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the US to choose from. But while there used to be very few English-taught programs in countries that didn’t speak English, many European graduate schools now use English as their main language of instruction to attract the smartest students from all over the world.
In France, for example, business schools like emlyon business school offer a variety of master’s programs taught entirely in English, as well as language support classes for students who want to learn French while they study.
Some business schools even work with universities in neighboring countries to offer joint degrees. For example, the Msc in Management – European triple degree – Grande Ecole program is taught entirely in English on three of Europe’s largest campuses. The two-year management course at emlyon business school, Ludwig Maximilian Universitat, and Lancaster University Management School will take you to France, Germany, and the UK. It lets you choose to focus on finance, marketing, strategy, or corporate development.
I’ll have to lower the quality of what I teach.
Even if you don’t know much about a country’s education system, that doesn’t mean that the teaching at their universities isn’t as good as it is at home. In fact, there are many great places to study in every part of the world. This is shown by the fact that universities from all over the world are listed in the QS World University Rankings® 2018.
There are 369 universities on this year’s list that are only in Europe. Some of these universities are some of the most prestigious and oldest in the world. You can also use our rankings to find a good school for the subject you want to study. In the 2018 QS Business Masters Rankings, the master’s programs in finance and management at emlyon business school were ranked 9th and 12th in the world, respectively. This is no small feat!
Studying is not the best way to learn about the world.
There are more ways to see the world and learn about a new country than just taking a gap year. For example, studying in a new country can give you a much broader range of new experiences than just visiting for a few weeks.
Being at a university abroad also gives you the chance to travel while still having a structure and a safety net you can count on, not to mention a degree. You’re also more likely to make friends with people from the area when you’re at university than when you’re on vacation. This will make your time there more interesting.
Employers will be surprised by my degree from another country.
This used to be true ten years ago, but attitudes have changed dramatically since then, and employers are now much more used to seeing job applicants who have studied abroad. In fact, it would be hard to find an employer who wouldn’t be impressed by your international experience, since knowing a foreign language and understanding another culture can be huge assets for a business.
In fact, a recent study found that students who took part in an Erasmus program are 23% less likely to be unemployed five years after graduation than their peers who did not study abroad.
If I move abroad for a few years, my relationships back home will be ruined.
Going abroad might make you feel like you’re turning your back on your friends and family, but that’s no longer true. If you’re in a relationship, it’s much easier to have a successful long-distance relationship now, especially if you talk honestly about your hopes and dreams for the future.
Obviously, it can be hard to show your partner that you’re thinking about them when you’re far away, but little things like sending them a message to wake up to or sending them a care package out of the blue can make them feel important. Set up a routine with regular Skype calls and, if you can afford it, plans to see each other in person.
